It’s January!

Bonne annee!
I hope the New Year has been good so far.
Judging by all commercials that I’m seeing, January is the month we’re supposed to start working on a “healthy diet”.
Hmmmm.
I think we all know what we are supposed to be doing. Less carbs, more vegetables, and fruits.
Get off the couch. Close the computer. More steps. More exercise.
Believe me when I say I am the worlds worst at getting started on this kind of stuff. I can spend more energy on excuses than actually doing something. But I do know an easy way to get started . . .
Drink more tea! Yep!
This information is actually from Le Blog No.8 (2022) but I believe it bears repeating.
After doing a little research, I found some interesting facts about tea and its health benefits.
Green tea: Made with steamed tea leaves, it has a high concentration of EGCG and has been widely studied. Green tea’s antioxidants may interfere with the growth of bladder, breast, lung, stomach, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers; prevent clogging of the arteries, burn fat, counteract oxidative stress on the brain, reduce risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, reduce risk of stroke, and improve cholesterol levels. Some say it may even help with weight loss.
Black tea: Made with fermented tea leaves, black tea has the highest caffeine content and forms the basis for flavored teas like chai, along with some instant teas. Studies have shown that black tea may protect lungs from damage caused by exposure to cigarette smoke. It also may reduce the risk of stroke.
Chamomile tea: Its antioxidants may help prevent complications from diabetes, like loss of vision and nerve and kidney damage, and stunt the growth of cancer cells.
Hibiscus: A small study found that drinking three cups of hibiscus tea daily lowered blood pressure in people with modestly elevated levels.
Rooibos (red tea): A South African herb that is fermented. Although it has flavonoids with cancer-fighting properties, medical studies have been limited.
So, guess what? Drinking tea and herbal teas is actually good for you!
Now that you know the benefits of drinking tea, invite a friend over for a luncheon-tea and start planning your walking schedule. After all, walking or exercising with someone makes the time go by faster and it keeps you accountable.

Here’s a tasty, and healthy salad to serve. Don’t forget the tea, iced or hot, it’s good for you.
Cote d’Azur Salad
2 cans of chickpeas (15 ounce) drained and rinsed.
1 large cucumber, diced
1 small red bell pepper, diced
4 oz of feta cheese, crumbled
½ cup chopped Roma tomatoes
¼ cup sliced Kalamata olives, drained
5-6 Romaine lettuce leaves
¼ cup parsley, finely chopped (for garnish)
Combine all the prepared salad ingredients in a medium bowl except the parsley and lettuce. Shake the vinaigrette well then toss together with the Mediterranean Lemon Vinaigrette. (Recipe below)
Lay one large leaf of Romaine across a plate or shallow salad bowl and spoon mixed salad ingredients over the lettuce. Garnish with a little chopped parsley. Makes 4 to 6 servings depending on if you are serving as a main course or a side salad.
Mediterranean Lemon Vinaigrette
½ cup olive oil
¼ cup fresh lemon juice
1 tsp Dijon mustard
½ tsp honey
1 garlic clove, minced
Salt and pepper
Mix all the above ingredients together in a glass mason jar. Shake well and set aside. You can also refrigerate for use tomorrow.
Okay, that’s all for now. Thanks for reading.
I’m going for a walk. How about you?
